Train with a Friend
If you’re looking for an easy way to improve your results, the answer could be simpler than you think. Recruit a training buddy!
Here are a few benefits that you can enjoy when you work out with a friend instead of going alone.
They’ll make it harder to cancel your workout
It’s too easy to make an excuse not to train when you’re doing it alone. When you know your friend is counting on you, it makes it a much bigger deal to cancel the session. More than likely, you will enjoy yourself once you get there and as they say, the only workout you regret is the one you didn’t do.
You will benefit from a bit of healthy competition
Who doesn’t sneak a look at the person next to them to see what weight they’re lifting, or to notice what level their treadmill is on? Whether you admit it or not, we all have that internal drive to do better when someone else is training with us. Having a gym buddy that can run faster or lift more than you is a good thing – it will drive you to go harder than you would if you were training solo.
You can both mix things up
If you’re doing the same old same old exercises at the gym, your body starts to feel less of the benefit. You and your training buddy can help each other to step out of your comfort zones. Add one more plate. Push yourself to do one more rep. Turn that cross trainer up one more level until it hurts.
They can be your cheer squad
Perhaps you spent the weekend overindulging on wine/cheese/pizza/all of the above. Or maybe you’re having a day where you just feel a bit flat. That doesn’t mean your fitness needs to go out the window. Your training buddy can help dust you off, remind you of your goals and how far you’ve come together.
You can seriously over-share
Who else but your training buddy gets excited talking fitness inspiration, planking videos or discussing the calories in your morning caffeine fix? This is your person to share all of that internal chatter that keeps you motivated (and up at night). They will actually care how many calories you’ve burnt today or steps you’ve taken, whereas your work colleagues probably don’t want to hear about it.
You might end up moving more
Not only will you reap the benefits of training with a friend when you’re already at the gym, but you might end up going more often. Set it up so that your friend gets in touch if they decide on a spur of the moment gym session.
You can use each other’s strengths
Perhaps your friend has some great running advice to share, while you can help them perfect their kettle bell swing. Together you can help each other to achieve more, push harder, and get more out of your workout.
They will tell you the truth
You can ask your friend for some honest feedback. Your gym friend will tell you and push you for one more when they know you can. By spending time exercising together you will get to know each other’s limits and be able to help each other reach your full potential.
