Stress Beaten by Food?

stress1Stress is higher and higher with the pressures of modern life. Stress increases cortisol levels which have a negative impact on muscle tissue as well as increasing the risk of stroke, heart disease and depression.

Lifestyle choices are both the cause and the cure of too much stress. If you can’t change your lifestyle, at least try to eat more stress reducing foods. Here are five of the best.

Tryptophan is an amino acid with strong relaxing effects on the body. Tryptophan rich foods include soybeans and soybean based products such as tofu and soy milk; sea foods such as shrimps and salmon, chicken breast and turkey are also recommended as opposed to red meats which can increase cancer risks.

Relaxing your muscles will by association help relax your mind. Extra Calcium improves bone growth as well as relaxing muscles.

stress2Instead of feeding a coffee habit, which although providing a temporary high also leads to lethargy as it wears off, try a relaxing cup of chamomile tea to aid digestion as well as relaxing your muscles and your mind.

Fish rich in essential fats as well as protein, such as sardines, salmon and mackerel, help bring blood sugar levels back to normal, reducing stress and helping repair worn muscle tissue. Walnuts and flax seed are also good sources of essential fats.

Finally there’s Magnesium. Stress tends to lower magnesium levels in the body. Taking a magnesium supplement can help lower cortisol levels. Otherwise, eat more magnesium rich foods such as beans, spinach and broccoli, nuts, tofu and halibut. Other than that, try breathing more deeply.
